History
In 1966, Maxwell Laboratories, Inc. was formed by former General Dynamics engineers who had developed capacitors for pulsed plasma thrusters, a form of electric propulsion for spacecraft. The company grew first as a high voltage pulse capacitor manufacturer, and then as a pulse power systems contractor. In 1987, the capacitor manufacturing operation was moved into its present location on Greencraig Lane. Maxwell acquired other product lines and companies, diversifying, and eventually changing its name to Maxwell Technologies, Inc.
Maxwell formed the Energy Products division, whose products included high voltage capacitors, power supplies, resistors, and fuses, as well as ceramic capacitors and ultracapacitors, in the mid 1990's. In March 2000, the high voltage components portion of the division was sold to General Atomics, becoming General Atomics Energy Products (GAEP). The facility and personnel remained the same.
Effective December 1st, 2003 GAEP merged into General Atomics Electronic Systems, Inc., an affiliate company of General Atomics that manufactures other commercial products. Today four product lines are manufactured within the 77,000 square foot facility at Greencraig Lane, high voltage components, high voltage power supplies and subsystems, radiation monitoring systems, and terminal automation products.
